How to Use Pro Micro-Contrast in DxO PhotoLab

Micro-contrast is one of DxO’s most underrated tools. It enhances fine detail, adds depth and improves texture without looking digitally sharpened. This is the exact method I use to give images a clean, high-end, professional look.

What Micro-Contrast Actually Does

Unlike standard contrast or sharpening, micro-contrast enhances extremely fine tonal transitions. This creates a sense of clarity without edge halos or harshness — ideal for beauty, portraits, fashion and travel photography.

Why DxO Does It Better

DxO’s optical modules allow Micro-contrast to work with lens-specific data, preserving natural detail where other tools create artifacts.

Step-by-Step Workflow

Step 1 — Enable “Lens Sharpness + Global Contrast” first

This prepares the image for a balanced contrast curve before adding micro-contrast.

Step 2 — Raise Micro-contrast between +10 and +30

Small increments have a big impact. Avoid going too high — subtlety gives a premium look.

Step 3 — Use Fine Contrast (Advanced Contrast)

Adjust Micro-contrast by tonal range (highlights, midtones, shadows) for precision control.

Step 4 — Export as DNG for final refinement

The added depth and clarity remain intact through your full editing pipeline.

The Result

Your image gains depth, clarity and dimensionality without looking over-processed — ideal for professional delivery.
