Welcome to Lesson 08 of DxO PhotoLab Zero to Hero. In this lesson we are looking at contrast. After exposure and white balance, contrast is one of the most important adjustments for giving a photograph depth, structure and visual impact.
Contrast controls the relationship between the bright and dark areas of an image. A flat photograph often has very little separation between tones, while a high contrast photograph has stronger separation between highlights and shadows. The goal is not simply to add more contrast, but to use it in a way that supports the subject and mood of the photograph.
Global Contrast
Global contrast affects the overall difference between light and dark areas across the whole image.
Microcontrast
Microcontrast affects smaller tonal differences, helping detail, texture and local definition feel more pronounced.

What Is Contrast?
Contrast is the difference between lighter and darker tones. If a photograph feels flat, dull or lacking in shape, it may need more contrast. If it feels harsh, crunchy or too dramatic, it may have too much contrast.
In DxO PhotoLab, contrast is useful because RAW files can sometimes look quite flat at first. A controlled contrast adjustment can help bring the image to life and make the subject stand out more clearly.
Global Contrast
Global contrast affects the whole image. Increasing it generally makes bright areas brighter and dark areas darker. This can make a photograph feel punchier and more dramatic, but it can also cause highlights to become too bright or shadows to become too heavy if pushed too far.
As a beginner, make small adjustments and watch the entire photograph. Contrast should improve the image without making it look artificial.
Microcontrast

However, microcontrast should be used carefully on portraits and skin because too much can make faces look rough or overly detailed. A small amount often works better than a heavy adjustment.
