Welcome to Lesson 17 of DxO PhotoLab Zero to Hero. In this lesson we are looking at Photo Library and Virtual Copies. This lesson is less about changing how an image looks and more about building a cleaner, more flexible editing workflow.

As your photography archive grows, organisation becomes increasingly important. It is easy to focus only on sliders and editing tools, but a good workflow also depends on being able to find images, compare versions and experiment without damaging your original files.

DxO PhotoLab works directly with your folder structure, which means you can browse photographs where they already live on your computer or hard drive. Combined with Virtual Copies, this gives you a simple way to create different versions of the same image without duplicating the original RAW file.

What Is Photo Library?

The Photo Library is the organisational centre of DxO PhotoLab. It allows you to browse folders, locate images and move through your photographs without needing to import everything into a separate closed catalogue.

For many photographers, this direct folder-based approach feels simple and transparent. Your files remain where you placed them, while PhotoLab reads and displays them so you can review, rate, edit and export your images.

Why Organisation Matters

When you only have a few images, organisation may not feel important. But as soon as you start shooting regularly, a clear structure becomes essential. Good organisation helps you find images faster, compare edits more easily and avoid wasting time searching through folders.

This is especially useful for travel photography, client work, YouTube thumbnails, blog images, portfolio edits and long-term personal projects.

What Are Virtual Copies?

Virtual Copies allow you to create alternative edits from the same original image. You might create one colour version, one black and white version, one high contrast version, one crop for social media and one cleaner version for printing.

The important point is that these are virtual versions. You are not duplicating the original RAW file. You are creating different editing instructions for the same source photograph, which keeps your workflow flexible and efficient.

Non-Destructive Editing

DxO PhotoLab uses non-destructive editing. This means your original RAW file is not permanently changed when you adjust exposure, colour, contrast, cropping or any other setting.

This gives you the freedom to experiment. You can revisit an image later, reset settings, create a new Virtual Copy or compare different treatments without worrying that you have ruined the original file.

Comparing Different Versions

Virtual Copies are especially useful when comparing creative directions. Instead of trying to remember whether a colour version or black and white version looked better, you can create both and compare them directly.

This is a useful habit for beginners because it encourages experimentation. It also helps you develop taste by seeing how different choices affect the final image.

Building A Better Workflow

A simple workflow might look like this: browse images in Photo Library, rate your favourites, edit the strongest files, create Virtual Copies for alternative looks, compare the versions and then export the final selections.

This keeps your process organised and gives you creative freedom without creating chaos in your folders.
