Welcome to Lesson 09 of DxO PhotoLab Zero to Hero. In this lesson we are looking at noise and DeepPRIME. Noise reduction is one of the areas where DxO PhotoLab has built a very strong reputation, especially for photographers working with RAW files, high ISO images and difficult lighting conditions.

Image noise often appears as grain, speckling, colour blotches or rough texture in darker areas of a photograph. It is especially common when shooting in low light, using a high ISO setting, photographing indoors, shooting at night, or recovering underexposed images in editing.

This lesson explains what noise is, why it appears, and how DxO PhotoLab’s DeepPRIME and DeepPRIME XD tools can help create cleaner, more detailed images without making the photograph look overly smooth or artificial.

What Is Image Noise?

Noise is the visual roughness you may notice in a photograph, especially in shadows or darker areas. It can look like grain, coloured dots or a rough texture across the image. Some noise can be acceptable, and in certain photographs it can even add character, but too much noise can make an image look messy or low quality.

Noise often appears when your camera has to work harder to capture an image. This usually happens in low light, when using a high ISO setting, or when a photograph is underexposed and then brightened during editing. The more you push a difficult file, the more visible noise can become.

Understanding noise is important because it affects many types of photography, including travel, street, documentary, weddings, portraits, interiors and night photography.

Why High ISO Creates Noise

ISO controls how sensitive your camera is to light. When you raise the ISO, the camera can capture brighter images in darker conditions, but the trade-off is often more noise. A photograph shot at ISO 6400 will usually show more noise than one shot at ISO 100.

This does not mean high ISO is bad. Sometimes raising ISO is the right decision because it allows you to keep your shutter speed fast enough and avoid motion blur. A sharp noisy image is often better than a blurry clean one.

The key is knowing that noise can often be improved later in DxO PhotoLab, especially when working with RAW files.

What Is DeepPRIME?

DeepPRIME is DxO PhotoLab’s advanced noise reduction and demosaicing technology for RAW files. In simple terms, it is designed to reduce noise while keeping as much useful detail as possible. This is why many photographers use PhotoLab specifically for difficult RAW files.

Traditional noise reduction can sometimes make images look too smooth, waxy or artificial. DeepPRIME is designed to be more intelligent, cleaning the file while preserving detail and texture. This can make high ISO images look cleaner without destroying the character of the photograph.

For beginners, the main idea is simple: if a RAW image looks noisy, DeepPRIME is one of the first tools to explore inside DxO PhotoLab.

DeepPRIME XD And Stronger Noise Reduction

Depending on your version of DxO PhotoLab, you may also see DeepPRIME XD. This is a more advanced option designed for even stronger noise reduction and detail recovery. It can be useful for very noisy files, but it should still be used with judgement.

Not every image needs the strongest setting. Some photographs only need subtle cleaning. Others may benefit from more powerful processing. The goal is to improve the file while keeping it believable.

As with all editing tools, the best result is usually not the most extreme setting. It is the setting that makes the image better without making the processing obvious.

When To Use Noise Reduction

Use noise reduction when an image looks grainy, rough or messy, particularly in shadow areas. It is especially helpful for low-light images, indoor photographs, night photography, high ISO street shots and older camera files that struggle in darker conditions.

Noise reduction is also useful before exporting images for web, social media or print because cleaner files usually look more polished. However, too much noise reduction can remove fine detail, so it is important to balance smoothness with texture.

In a simple workflow, you would normally correct exposure first, check white balance and contrast, then assess whether noise reduction is needed.
