Dehancer is organised around the complete analog image pipeline.
A film profile forms one stage alongside film compression, print

FilmPack asks which film stock you want to recreate. Dehancer asks
how you want the entire analog capture and printing process to

DxO creates its renderings through laboratory measurements of
original film response curves, tonal behaviour and grain.
The large library is particularly valuable for still photographers
interested in the history of Kodak, Fujifilm, Ilford, Agfa, Polaroid
and other recognised photographic materials.
Dehancer contains more than 60 film profiles drawn from both
photographic and motion-picture stocks. The profiles are also based
on real analog media and nonlinear image processing.
Dehancer places particular emphasis on the relationship between
negative film and its print stage. This can make its workflow feel
closer to cinema colour timing and laboratory printing.
FilmPack provides more individual profiles. Dehancer provides fewer
profiles but allows each one to sit inside a more extensive analog
process.
Which has more accurate film profiles?
There is no simple universal winner because the products make
different technical and aesthetic decisions.
FilmPack is extremely convincing when the objective is to select a
specific still-photography stock and reproduce its measured colour,
tone and grain.
Dehancer is extremely convincing when the objective is to recreate
the interaction between negative film, print media, grain and
optical artefacts.
The most reliable test is to process the same representative
photographs in both applications and compare skin tones, saturated
colours, shadows, highlights and grain at full resolution.
Film grain: FilmPack vs Dehancer
FilmPack’s grain is connected to the characteristics of the selected
film stock. Grain size and behaviour can also respond to the chosen
output format.
This makes it easy to select a film rendering and receive a
corresponding starting point for its analog texture.
Dehancer treats grain as a physical simulation rather than a simple
texture overlay. Grain profiles can reflect common film formats and
sensitivities before being adjusted creatively.
Dehancer’s grain can interact with the rest of the processing chain,
helping the final texture feel embedded in the photograph rather
than placed over it.

Halation and bloom
Halation is the warm red or orange glow that can appear around
bright highlights and high-contrast edges when light travels through
film emulsion and reflects back into it.
Bloom is a broader softening and diffusion of bright light caused by
optical scattering and the behaviour of the film layers.
Dehancer provides dedicated tools for both effects. Halation can be
adjusted through different format profiles, including stronger
no-remjet behaviour.
Bloom includes profiles inspired by common film formats and allows
photographers to control how highlights spread into nearby areas.
These tools are especially useful with neon signs, backlit hair,
reflections, specular highlights, night photography and cinematic
portraiture.
FilmPack includes textures, light leaks, blur, vignetting and other
analog-inspired finishing tools, but it does not provide the same
dedicated halation-and-bloom system.
Optical-effects verdict
Dehancer is the clear choice for halation and bloom.
FilmPack can produce atmospheric analog images, but Dehancer
provides significantly more precise control over these specific
optical characteristics.
Negative film, print film and photographic paper
Dehancer’s processing chain is strongly influenced by traditional
laboratory printing.
A negative film profile can be interpreted through a print-film or
photographic-paper stage. This changes colour, contrast, highlight
behaviour and the overall density structure.
Print profiles can include well-known motion-picture print stocks,
while photographic-paper options support still-image workflows.
This separation between negative and print stages is one of
Dehancer’s strongest distinctions. It allows two photographs using
the same negative profile to take on different final personalities
according to the chosen print medium.
FilmPack generally presents the finished rendering of an individual
film stock more directly. The photographer can then refine colour,
grain, contrast and toning without constructing the analog process
from as many separate stages.
FilmPack is faster. Dehancer offers more control over how the final
print interpretation is created.
CMY Color Head and subtractive colour correction
Dehancer’s CMY Color Head is inspired by the cyan, magenta and
yellow filtration used in colour enlargers.
This creates a subtractive approach to colour correction that can
feel different from conventional digital colour wheels.
Print Toning can alter the colour temperature of shadows, midtones
and highlights independently, supporting subtle split-toning and
print-inspired colour balance.
FilmPack provides HSL controls, colour filters, split toning,
contrast and other creative adjustments.
FilmPack’s tools are likely to feel more familiar to photographers
coming from Lightroom or PhotoLab. Dehancer’s controls may feel more
natural to colourists and photographers interested in traditional
darkroom printing.
Film compression, exposure and highlight behaviour
Dehancer includes tools designed to reproduce the nonlinear
compression associated with film highlights.
Film Compression can gently reshape bright areas rather than
allowing highlights to feel abruptly clipped or digitally harsh.
Push and Pull controls alter the behaviour of the selected film
profile in a way inspired by changing film development.
FilmPack’s measured response curves also affect highlights, shadows
and colour according to the selected stock.
The difference is that Dehancer exposes more of the processing
stages as individual creative controls, while FilmPack presents a
more immediate stock-led rendering.
RAW editing and PhotoLab integration
FilmPack’s most important workflow advantage is its integration with
DxO PhotoLab 9.
After a FilmPack licence is activated, its renderings and creative
controls become available inside the PhotoLab workspace.
The photographer can combine DeepPRIME noise reduction, DxO Optics
Modules, exposure, colour, AI Masks, U Point adjustments and
FilmPack rendering while working from the original supported RAW
file.
This reduces the need to create a TIFF before applying the final
film character. Settings can also form part of a PhotoLab preset and
be synchronised across several photographs.
FilmPack’s standalone application can also open supported RAW files
and apply available optical corrections.
Dehancer Desktop provides its own standalone RAW-processing and batch
environment. It can organise photographs into projects, apply
presets and export processed files.
The Dehancer plugins for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Capture One
and Affinity operate according to the capabilities of each host.
Some workflows involve sending a rendered or externally edited file
into the plugin rather than applying the look directly to the
untouched camera RAW data.
PhotoLab users therefore gain the smoothest RAW workflow from
FilmPack. Photographers working across several different hosts may
find Dehancer more flexible.
Photoshop and Lightroom workflows
FilmPack 8 includes a dedicated Photoshop palette. Presets can be
previewed and applied directly to layers or flattened images.
Lightroom Classic can send one or several selected photographs to
FilmPack as an external editor before the processed files return to
the catalogue.
Dehancer provides photo plugins for Photoshop and Lightroom,
bringing its film profiles, print stages, grain, halation and bloom
into those workflows.
Dehancer can be especially attractive in Photoshop because the
complete analog treatment can be placed on a separate layer or used
as part of a wider retouching document.
Lightroom users should test batch behaviour carefully because
external-editor architecture and plugin behaviour can affect how
several images are passed between applications.
Capture One and Affinity compatibility
Dehancer has a clear advantage for photographers whose main editor
is Capture One or Affinity.
Capture One users can send a photograph into Dehancer through an
external editing workflow before returning the processed result to
the original session or catalogue.
Affinity can access the Dehancer Photoshop-style plugin where the
current host and operating system are supported.
FilmPack’s strongest integrations are PhotoLab, Photoshop and
Lightroom Classic. It does not provide the same central workflow for
Capture One and Affinity users.
This distinction may be more important than the exact number of film
profiles because it determines how comfortably the software fits
into everyday editing.
Scanned-film conversion and negative inversion
FilmPack 8 includes a Scanned Film Optimization panel specifically
designed for digitised negatives.
The software can invert colour and black-and-white negatives and
provides dedicated tone-curve presets for correcting colour shifts,
density and contrast.
This gives film-scanning photographers a focused starting point
before applying further restoration or creative rendering.
Dehancer can grade film scans and contains extensive film-oriented
colour tools, but its current Photo Edition is not presented around
the same dedicated one-click negative-inversion panel.
FilmPack is therefore the more straightforward option for
photographers digitising a personal archive of negatives.
Using the same film look for photography and video
Dehancer has a major advantage for hybrid photographers and
filmmakers.
Related Dehancer products are available for photography, DaVinci
Resolve, Final Cut Pro, Premiere Pro and After Effects.
The interfaces and processing concepts share the same broad analog
language: film profiles, grain, halation, bloom, print stages and
film-inspired colour correction.
A creator can therefore build related looks for still photographs,
YouTube films, commercial video, social content and cinematic
projects.
The exact settings may not transfer identically between every host
and media type. A photograph and a log video file still require
different input preparation and exposure decisions.
FilmPack is primarily designed for still photography. It does not
provide an equivalent cross-platform video-grading family.
Hybrid-creator verdict
Dehancer is the stronger choice for a consistent photo-and-video identity.
FilmPack remains excellent for stills, but Dehancer provides a

FilmPack includes presets built around its film renderings and

This makes FilmPack particularly efficient for applying one cohesive
film look across a street series, wedding, travel project or

Dehancer provides more than 80 ready-made presets in its current
photo workflow, and users can create their own complete recipes.
Dehancer Desktop supports projects, copying and pasting edits,

FilmPack provides the more natural batch workflow for existing

FilmPack is generally easier to understand because the film library
is the centre of the application.
A photographer can select a colour or black-and-white stock, compare

Dehancer contains more interacting controls. Input preparation,
film profile, film compression, print, grain, halation, bloom and
colour-head decisions can all influence the final result.
This provides greater control but requires more understanding of the

renderings quickly. Dehancer rewards users who enjoy building a

FilmPack is sold as a perpetual licence for the purchased major
version.
The photographer can continue using that version without
maintaining an active monthly or annual subscription. Future major
upgrades may be sold separately.
Dehancer offers subscription plans and lifetime-purchase options.
The exact cost depends on whether the user needs photography only,
photo and video, individual plugins or a broader package.
FilmPack can represent better value for a PhotoLab user because it
expands an editor that is already part of the workflow.
Dehancer can represent better value for hybrid creators who would
otherwise purchase separate photo and video film-emulation tools.
Compare current prices carefully. A lower upfront cost does not
always produce the lowest long-term cost, while a lifetime licence
