What is the real difference between ViewPoint and Lightroom Transform?
Lightroom Transform and DxO ViewPoint can both straighten horizons,
correct converging lines and improve the geometry of architectural
photographs.
Lightroom Transform is part of a complete RAW-editing and
catalogue workflow.
It is designed to make global perspective correction quick,
repeatable and non-destructive.
DxO ViewPoint 5 is specialist geometry software.
It extends beyond normal global correction into local perspective,
local horizon, subject reshaping and Volume Deformation correction.
Lightroom asks how the whole photograph should be transformed.
ViewPoint can also ask which individual part of the photograph needs
to be changed.
That distinction is the main reason to purchase ViewPoint when
Lightroom already contains capable perspective tools.
The fundamental choice
Does the whole image need correction, or only one part of it?
Use Lightroom when one global transformation can solve the
photograph. Choose ViewPoint when different parts of the image
require different geometric treatment.
Lens distortion, perspective and volume deformation
These three problems are often confused, but they are not the same.
Lens distortion
Lens distortion is created by the optical design of the lens.
Straight lines may bow outwards with barrel distortion or curve
inwards with pincushion distortion.
Both Adobe and DxO use profiles to correct supported lenses.
Applying the correct lens profile before perspective correction can
improve the accuracy of the result.
Perspective distortion
Perspective distortion is caused primarily by the camera’s position
and angle relative to the subject.
A tall building photographed from street level may appear to narrow
towards the top because the camera was tilted upwards. Upright,
Guided Upright and ViewPoint’s perspective tools can correct this
geometric convergence.
Volume deformation
Volume deformation is the apparent stretching of three-dimensional
subjects near the edge of a wide-angle or ultra-wide-angle frame.
A person may appear unusually broad, a head may become elongated or
a circular object may look stretched even after ordinary lens
distortion and perspective have been corrected.
Lightroom Transform does not provide an equivalent dedicated tool
for this problem. ViewPoint’s Volume Deformation correction is one
of its most important reasons for existing.
Lightroom Classic provides several Upright modes within the
Transform panel.
Auto analyses the image and applies a balanced
perspective correction. Level concentrates on the
horizontal alignment. Vertical corrects vertical
perspective, while Full attempts a more complete
horizontal and vertical correction.
These automatic modes can be extremely effective when the photograph
contains clear architectural lines.
Lightroom recommends enabling the relevant lens profile before
applying Upright. Correcting the optical distortion first gives the
perspective analysis straighter and more reliable lines to examine.
Guided Upright
Guided Upright allows the photographer to draw between two and four
guides directly over lines that should become vertical or
horizontal.
This is useful when the automatic modes misunderstand the subject or
when one architectural feature should determine the final geometry.
Guided Upright is often all an architectural or property
photographer needs. A pair of vertical guides can straighten a
building, while additional horizontal guides can control the top and
bottom alignment.
Manual Transform sliders
After applying an Upright mode, the result can be refined through
manual sliders.
Lightroom provides Distortion, Vertical, Horizontal, Rotate,
Aspect, Scale, X Offset and Y Offset controls.
These sliders allow the photographer to reduce an overly aggressive
automatic result, adjust the apparent width or height of the
subject, reposition the transformed image and fill the available
frame more effectively.
Constrain Crop
Perspective correction can create transparent or empty areas near
the image boundaries.
Constrain Crop automatically limits the crop to the visible image
area. This is convenient, but strong corrections may remove a
substantial amount of the original composition.
The Scale and Offset sliders can help reposition the image before
the final crop is accepted.
Lightroom verdict
Lightroom is already extremely capable for normal global correction.
Do not purchase extra software until Auto, Guided Upright and the
manual Transform sliders have been tested on your real
photographs.
ViewPoint provides automatic and manual perspective tools inside a
workspace designed specifically for image geometry.
Parallel-line tools can make vertical or horizontal lines run
parallel. Rectangle tools can restore rectangular subjects, while
multi-point correction provides greater control over difficult
planes and architectural surfaces.
The standalone interface includes guides, a loupe and automatic
previews intended to make precise alignment easier.
ViewPoint can be used as a standalone application, through
compatible Adobe plugin workflows or as an integrated palette
inside supported DxO PhotoLab versions.
The conventional perspective tools overlap with Lightroom
Transform. The more important differences appear when ReShape
Fusion and Volume Deformation are required.

What is ReShape Fusion?
ReShape Fusion is ViewPoint 5’s local geometry system.
A grid is placed over the photograph. Individual control points or
selected areas can then be moved, scaled or rotated without forcing
the whole image through the same transformation.
The Propagation control determines how strongly a local adjustment
blends into the surrounding area.
A low propagation can isolate the correction more tightly. A wider
propagation can distribute the change gradually across the frame,
helping the result appear more natural.
Local movement
An architectural detail can be repositioned, a subject can be moved
slightly away from the frame edge or a distracting geometric
imbalance can be reduced.
Local scale
One person or object can be resized without scaling the entire
photograph. This is useful when a wide lens has made an edge subject
appear disproportionately large.
Local rotation
A selected object or architectural element can be rotated while the
surrounding composition remains broadly unchanged.
Local horizon and perspective
One area can be levelled or corrected independently when applying a
global transformation would damage another part of the photograph.
Lightroom’s Transform sliders cannot isolate one subject in this
way. Their geometry changes apply to the whole frame.
Wide-angle lenses allow photographers to include more of a room,
building or group, but subjects near the edges can appear stretched.
This is particularly visible in group photographs where the people
at the centre look natural but those near the corners appear wider
or elongated.
ViewPoint’s Volume Deformation correction is designed to restore
more believable proportions.
ViewPoint 5 can also apply this correction locally through ReShape
Fusion. One stretched person can be corrected without forcing the
central subjects through the same adjustment.
This can be valuable for weddings, events, property interiors,
editorial portraiture and travel photographs captured in confined
spaces.
Lightroom can correct optical distortion and perspective, but it
does not contain a dedicated equivalent for local three-dimensional
volume stretching.
The strongest reason to buy ViewPoint
Volume Deformation solves a different problem from Upright.
Straightening a building and restoring a stretched person are not
the same correction. Lightroom handles the first extremely well.
ViewPoint provides the specialist tool for the second.
Architecture and exterior photography
Lightroom is an excellent first choice for most exterior
architectural images.
Auto or Vertical Upright can often correct a building immediately.
Guided Upright provides more control when the automatic analysis
chooses the wrong lines.
ViewPoint becomes more valuable when the building contains several
planes that do not respond naturally to one global correction.
ReShape Fusion can alter one architectural section, while local
perspective controls can protect another part of the structure.
ViewPoint can also help when a corrected building appears
unnaturally compressed or when part of the composition needs subtle
reshaping after the main perspective change.
Interiors and property photography
Lightroom Transform is fast and effective for high-volume property
work.
Vertical Upright can straighten walls, Guided Upright can align
doorways and cabinets, and synchronised settings can accelerate a
group of images captured from similar camera positions.
ViewPoint is more useful when furniture, people or objects near the
edges become stretched by an ultra-wide lens.
Local corrections can help restore a chair, table, doorway or
architectural feature without changing the whole room.
The specialist correction may be worth the additional processing
time for premium property, interior-design and architectural
commissions.
Group photographs and event photography
Group photographs are one of the clearest ViewPoint use cases.
When a wide lens is used in a confined room, the people at the edges
may appear broader than those near the centre.
Ordinary lens-profile and perspective correction may straighten the
room while leaving the people looking unnatural.
Local Volume Deformation can target the affected subjects while
protecting the central group.
Lightroom remains the faster option when the image only requires a
level horizon or corrected background lines.
Travel and street photography
Lightroom is likely to be sufficient for most travel and street
photographs.
Automatic Upright can correct buildings quickly, while the manual
sliders allow a more restrained result when complete correction
makes the photograph feel unnatural.
ViewPoint becomes useful for crowded interior scenes, ultra-wide
travel photographs and compositions containing people close to the
edges.
ReShape Fusion can also make subtle compositional changes that would
be difficult to achieve through a global Transform adjustment.
Automatic correction vs manual control
Automatic correction is valuable because most photographers do not
want to build every perspective adjustment from the beginning.
Lightroom’s Upright modes are extremely efficient and often produce
an excellent starting point with one click.
The danger is overcorrection. A completely straight building can
look unnaturally wide or compressed when the original camera angle
was extreme.
Manual sliders should therefore be used to reduce or refine the
automatic result rather than accepting every correction at full
strength.
ViewPoint provides more manual possibilities, but greater control
also creates a greater risk of bending lines, altering proportions
or producing an artificial result.
The correct objective is not always perfect geometry. It is a
photograph that feels believable.
RAW workflow and image quality
Lightroom Transform works directly inside the non-destructive RAW
workflow.
The original file remains unchanged while the perspective settings
are stored as editing instructions. The photographer can revisit,
synchronise or reset the correction at any time.
When ViewPoint is launched from Lightroom Classic through Edit In,
Lightroom normally creates a rendered TIFF or JPEG for the external
editor.
This creates an additional file and means the ViewPoint correction
is no longer being applied directly to the untouched camera RAW data.
ViewPoint provides a more integrated RAW workflow when activated
inside a compatible version of DxO PhotoLab. Its tools then become
available within the PhotoLab editing environment.
This distinction is important. Lightroom users gain the best RAW
workflow efficiency from Lightroom Transform. PhotoLab users gain
the best ViewPoint integration inside PhotoLab.
Using ViewPoint with Photoshop
ViewPoint can be launched from Photoshop through the Filters menu.
This is useful when a photograph has already entered a layered
retouching workflow and a geometric correction is required during
production.
Working on a duplicated layer can preserve the previous version and
make it easier to compare the correction.
Photoshop also contains its own Perspective Warp and transform
tools, but ViewPoint provides a more photography-focused interface
and its specialist Volume Deformation functions.
Using ViewPoint with PhotoLab
A valid ViewPoint licence unlocks additional geometry controls
inside compatible versions of PhotoLab.
Depending on the PhotoLab edition, this can add or expand
perspective tools, Volume Deformation, miniature effects, ReShape
Fusion, local horizon and perspective correction, local Volume
Deformation, and flip or mirror functions.
This is the strongest ViewPoint workflow because the geometry tools
can remain connected to the broader PhotoLab RAW edit.
PhotoLab users should check which perspective controls are already
included in their edition before purchasing ViewPoint. The main
reason to add ViewPoint may be ReShape Fusion and Volume
Deformation rather than ordinary global perspective correction.
Batch editing and synchronisation
Lightroom has the advantage for high-volume work.
Upright modes and manual Transform settings can be copied across
selected photographs.
Lightroom can either recalculate an Upright mode according to each
individual photograph or copy the exact transformation, depending
on the synchronisation choice.
Recalculation is useful when several photographs have similar but
not identical camera angles. Copying the exact transformation is
useful for bracketed exposures or repeated frames captured from the
same position.
ViewPoint corrections can form part of a repeatable workflow, but
its most valuable tools are often local and image specific.
A correction designed around one stretched subject may not transfer
meaningfully to another photograph.
Cropping and lost image area
Strong perspective correction changes the shape of the image and
creates empty areas around the boundaries.
Lightroom’s Constrain Crop can remove these areas automatically, but
it may also crop important parts of the composition.
The photographer should leave extra space around buildings and
interiors at the moment of capture whenever perspective correction
is expected.
ViewPoint also requires sufficient image area around the subject.
ReShape Fusion can alter local composition, but it cannot always
recover detail that was never captured.
Correction software is most effective when it supports careful
camera placement rather than attempting to replace it.
Ease of use and learning curve
Lightroom is easier for most photographers because Transform is one
panel inside an already familiar application.
Auto and Guided Upright can solve many photographs without requiring
a detailed understanding of geometry.
ViewPoint’s conventional perspective tools are also accessible, but
ReShape Fusion requires more practice.
Moving one grid point can influence neighbouring areas, and the
Propagation setting must be balanced carefully to avoid visible
warping.
The learning curve is justified when the specialist tools solve
recurring professional problems. It may feel unnecessary when the
photographer only straightens an occasional building.
Perpetual licence vs Adobe subscription
DxO ViewPoint 5 is sold through a perpetual licence for the
purchased major version.
The software can continue to be used without maintaining an ongoing
monthly subscription, although future major upgrades may be sold
separately.
Lightroom Transform is included within eligible Adobe Lightroom
subscription plans rather than purchased as a separate perspective
tool.
Lightroom provides excellent value when its catalogue, RAW editing,
cloud services and wider Adobe workflow are already being used.
ViewPoint provides better focused value when its specialist local
geometry and Volume Deformation tools solve paid professional work
that Lightroom cannot handle.
