What is the real difference between PhotoLab and Affinity?
The most important point is that DxO PhotoLab and Affinity are not
designed to perform exactly the same job.
DxO PhotoLab 9 is a specialist RAW-development
application. It converts original camera data into a
finished photograph while controlling noise, detail, colour, tone,
lens behaviour and local adjustments.
Affinity is a complete creative production
application. Its photo-editing tools sit alongside vector
design and page-layout tools, allowing photographs, graphics,
typography and publication elements to exist within one project.
Affinity can develop RAW files, but RAW conversion is only one part
of the application. PhotoLab does not attempt to provide Affinity’s
deep pixel editing, vector illustration, multilayer compositing or
page design.
The useful question is therefore not simply which application is
better. It is which stage of your workflow requires the strongest
specialist tool.
The fundamental choice
PhotoLab processes photographs. Affinity builds finished creative assets.
Choose PhotoLab when the original RAW file needs the highest
possible technical treatment. Choose Affinity when the developed
image needs detailed retouching, layers, graphics, typography or
publication design.
RAW development and image quality
Affinity includes a capable RAW-development environment with
exposure, colour, tone, lens, detail and noise controls. For
well-exposed photographs captured at moderate ISO settings, it can
produce an excellent starting image.
PhotoLab goes further because specialist RAW processing is the
central purpose of the product. DeepPRIME, DxO Optics Modules,
camera colour rendering and lens-sharpness optimisation are designed
to work together before the file is exported.
When PhotoLab recognises a supported camera-and-lens combination,
it can download a corresponding module created from DxO’s equipment
testing. The module can correct distortion, vignetting, chromatic
aberration and lens-specific variations in sharpness.
This can be particularly valuable for wide-angle lenses, compact
zooms, superzooms, travel lenses and modern optics that depend
heavily on software correction.
Affinity’s RAW development is useful when the photographer wants to
move quickly into layers, retouching or composite work. PhotoLab is
more attractive when the quality of the initial conversion will
determine the quality of every later stage.
DeepPRIME XD3 vs Affinity noise reduction
PhotoLab’s DeepPRIME technology is one of the strongest reasons to
purchase the application even when a capable free editor is
available.
DeepPRIME processes noise reduction and RAW demosaicing as connected
operations. PhotoLab 9 includes DeepPRIME 3 and DeepPRIME XD3 for
demanding Bayer and X-Trans RAW files.
The objective is not simply to blur visible grain. DeepPRIME is
designed to reduce noise while recovering fine detail and
preserving natural textures such as hair, fabric, fur, feathers,
foliage and stone.
Affinity provides noise-reduction controls within RAW development
and the wider pixel-editing environment. These can work well on
moderate noise and can be applied selectively using masks and
layers.
Affinity does not provide a direct equivalent to DeepPRIME’s
specialist RAW-processing pipeline. Photographers who regularly
work at high ISO are therefore more likely to see a clear reason to
purchase PhotoLab.
Who benefits most from DeepPRIME?
Wildlife photographers using fast shutter speeds, event
photographers working in dark venues, wedding photographers,
interior photographers, night street photographers and users of

Lens corrections and equipment-specific processing
PhotoLab’s optical corrections are another area where a specialist
paid application can provide value beyond a free general-purpose
editor.
DxO Optics Modules are created for supported combinations of camera
body and lens. PhotoLab can therefore apply corrections that reflect
the behaviour of the actual equipment used to capture the image.
Lens Sharpness Optimization can account for differences between the
centre and corners of the frame rather than applying identical
sharpening everywhere. Distortion, vignetting and chromatic
aberration can also be corrected automatically.
Affinity includes lens-profile and manual correction tools that are
suitable for many photographs. The distinction is that optical
science is one of DxO’s defining areas of development, whereas
Affinity’s greatest advantages appear after the RAW file has been
developed.
AI Masks, smart selections and local editing
PhotoLab 9 provides AI Masks for identifying subjects such as skies,
people, faces, hair, animals, vehicles and backgrounds.
These selections can be combined with U Point technology, control
points, control lines, gradients and brushes. A broad automatic
selection can therefore be refined according to local colour,
luminosity and position.
Affinity approaches selections from the perspective of a full
pixel-editing application. Smart selections, selection brushes,
channels, luminosity information, layer masks and refinement tools
can isolate complex subjects.
Affinity provides more flexibility when the selection will become
part of a composite, reconstruction or multilayer document.
PhotoLab provides a faster workflow when the selection is being
used to adjust exposure, colour, noise, sharpness or tone.
Masking verdict
PhotoLab is faster for photographic adjustments; Affinity is deeper for production.
Use PhotoLab when the objective is to adjust an existing area of
the photograph. Use Affinity when the selected area needs to be
replaced, reconstructed, composited or integrated into a larger
design.
Layers, masks and non-destructive editing
Layers are the clearest Affinity advantage. The application can
combine photographs, graphics, text, vector objects, adjustment
layers and live filters inside one document.
Each layer can have its own opacity, blending mode, mask and
position. Layers can be grouped, clipped and reorganised, allowing
complex work to remain editable throughout production.
Live filters and adjustment layers can be changed without
permanently altering the underlying image. This makes Affinity
suitable for professional retouching, advertising composites,
beauty work, product images and campaign artwork.
PhotoLab is also non-destructive, but it does not use a
Photoshop-style pixel-layer system. Its adjustments remain
connected to the photograph and sidecar information rather than a
multilayer creative document.
PhotoLab’s approach is more efficient for developing many
photographs. Affinity’s approach is more powerful for constructing
one highly finished image.
Detailed retouching, cloning and reconstruction
Affinity is the stronger application for detailed pixel retouching.
Its tools support cloning, healing, inpainting, dodging, burning,
selections, layer masks and complex reconstruction.
This type of workflow is valuable for beauty, skincare, fashion,
product, still-life and commercial photography where a photograph
may require significant local reconstruction.
PhotoLab provides repair and cloning tools that are suitable for
sensor dust, small distractions and normal photographic cleanup.
It is not intended to replace a specialist pixel-retouching
application.
A commercial photographer can therefore use PhotoLab to create the
strongest possible RAW base file and Affinity to complete the
detailed retouching.
Compositing, backgrounds and creative image construction
Affinity can place multiple photographs and visual elements into
one layered document. This supports background replacement,
advertising composites, montage, double exposure and texture
overlays.
Masks and blending modes allow each element to interact with the
rest of the composition. Vector shapes and typography can also be
introduced without moving the project into another design
application.
PhotoLab does not compete directly with this functionality. Its
local adjustments alter the photograph that already exists rather
than building a new image from several independent components.
Photographers creating finished campaign artwork, promotional
graphics, posters, covers or composite portraits will need Affinity
or another layer-based editor even when PhotoLab remains central to
RAW development.
HDR merging, focus merging and panoramas
Affinity supports workflows for combining several source
photographs. HDR merging can combine bracketed exposures to retain
information across a wider tonal range.
Focus merging can combine photographs focused at different
distances, making it useful for macro, product and still-life
photography where one exposure cannot provide sufficient depth of
field.
Panorama stitching can combine overlapping frames into a wider
composition. Image stacks can also support alignment and specialist
processing tasks.
PhotoLab is primarily designed to develop individual camera files.
Its RAW processing can be used before the files enter an HDR,
stacking or panorama workflow, but the final combination is better
handled inside Affinity.
Macros, batch processing and repeatable production
Affinity supports macros for recording a sequence of actions and
applying that sequence again. This can reduce repetitive work when
the same pixel-level process is required across several files.
Batch Jobs can process groups of images using export settings and
recorded macros. This is useful for resizing, sharpening, changing
formats or applying a repeated production treatment.
PhotoLab provides a different batch workflow. Photographers can
apply presets, copy adjustments, synchronise edits, rename files
and export complete groups of photographs.
PhotoLab is generally more efficient for applying photographic
development settings across a shoot. Affinity is more flexible when
the repeated work involves pixel editing or document production.
Photo management and organising a large library
PhotoLab includes PhotoLibrary tools for browsing folders, creating
projects, assigning ratings, applying metadata, searching and
filtering photographs.
This makes PhotoLab suitable for photographers who want to move
directly between image selection and RAW editing without creating a
separate creative document for every photograph.
Affinity is primarily document based. It can open, edit and save
photographs and projects, but it is not designed as a complete
photographic catalogue or digital asset-management system.
Affinity users managing thousands of photographs may therefore
require a separate browser, catalogue or folder-management
workflow.
Vector graphics, typography and page layout
The current Affinity combines pixel, vector and layout tools. This
greatly expands the types of finished work that can be created
without leaving the application.
A photographer can edit an image, create a vector logo, add
typography, build a promotional graphic and lay out multiple pages
inside the same creative environment.
This can be valuable for social graphics, advertising layouts,
portfolios, lookbooks, brochures, photo books and press materials
where photography forms only one part of the final design.
PhotoLab has no equivalent because these tasks sit outside its
purpose. It is designed to produce the photograph that can then be
placed into an Affinity design.
Which application is easier to learn?
PhotoLab can appear technical because it exposes detailed controls
for RAW processing, optics, noise, sharpening, colour and local
adjustment.
However, the application remains focused around photography. Once a
user understands where the main correction and customisation tools
are located, the workflow can become efficient and repeatable.
Affinity contains a broader range of creative disciplines. Pixel
editing, vector graphics and page layout each introduce their own
tools, panels, concepts and workflows.
Affinity may feel immediately familiar to experienced Photoshop,
Illustrator or design-software users. A photographer with no
previous layer-based editing experience may need more time to
understand masks, blending modes, live filters and document
structure.
PhotoLab is therefore easier when the objective is photographic RAW
development. Affinity requires a wider learning investment but
provides many more production possibilities.
