What is the main difference between PhotoLab and ON1 Photo RAW?
PhotoLab and ON1 Photo RAW are both marketed as complete
photographic editors, but the meaning of “complete” is different
in each application.
DxO PhotoLab 9 is complete as a high-quality RAW
development environment. It is designed to take an
original camera file through denoising, demosaicing, optical
correction, exposure, colour, local adjustments and export with a
strong emphasis on natural detail and technical image quality.
ON1 Photo RAW 2026 is complete as a broader all-in-one
photography application. It combines RAW development with
browsing, organisation, layers, masking, effects, object removal,
retouching, resizing, printing and creative finishing.
This difference explains most of the buying decision. PhotoLab
attempts to be exceptional at the central RAW-development process.
ON1 attempts to reduce the number of separate applications required
to complete an entire photographic workflow.
The fundamental choice
Do you want the strongest RAW processor or the broadest single application?
Choose PhotoLab when the quality of the source RAW file is your
first concern. Choose ON1 when convenience, layers, effects,
library tools and output options are more valuable than having
the most specialised RAW-processing pipeline.
RAW processing and fine image quality
PhotoLab’s greatest advantage is the way its major technologies
operate together. DeepPRIME processing, DxO Optics Modules and
lens-specific sharpness optimisation are designed as connected
parts of the RAW-development pipeline.
When PhotoLab recognises a supported camera and lens, it can
download a dedicated module created from DxO’s testing. The module
can correct distortion, vignetting, chromatic aberration and
differences in sharpness across the image frame.
This approach can be particularly valuable for compact cameras,
superzooms, wide-angle lenses, travel zooms, older optics and
modern lenses that depend heavily on digital correction.
ON1 Photo RAW also provides a complete RAW-development process with
exposure, colour, tone, curves, sharpening, noise reduction and
lens corrections. It can produce polished professional results and
has the practical advantage of being connected directly to layers,
effects, retouching and output.
The distinction is that RAW conversion is PhotoLab’s defining
speciality. In ON1, RAW conversion is the first stage of a much
wider editing environment.
Photographers who inspect fine texture at high magnification,
regularly print large, work with demanding sensors or frequently
rescue difficult files are more likely to appreciate PhotoLab’s
specialised processing.
DeepPRIME XD3 vs ON1 NoNoise AI
PhotoLab’s DeepPRIME technology processes noise reduction and RAW
demosaicing together. This matters because noise and image detail
are closely connected at the earliest stage of converting sensor
information into a visible photograph.
PhotoLab 9 includes DeepPRIME 3 and DeepPRIME XD3. The most advanced
mode is designed to recover fine detail while reducing luminance
noise, colour noise and other artefacts in difficult files.
DeepPRIME can be especially effective with feathers, fur, fabric,
foliage, hair, architecture and other subjects where aggressive
smoothing can destroy natural texture.
ON1 integrates NoNoise AI into Photo RAW. It analyses the image,
reduces noise and can work alongside ON1’s sharpening and masking
tools. The integrated approach is convenient because the result can
continue directly into layers, Effects or the rest of the ON1
workflow.
NoNoise AI is a capable and practical tool. However, when noise
reduction is the main reason for buying new software, PhotoLab
remains my recommendation. DeepPRIME is more central to DxO’s entire
processing philosophy.
Who benefits most from DeepPRIME?
Wildlife photographers using high shutter speeds, wedding and
event photographers working in low light, night street

Lens profiles, distortion and sharpness correction
PhotoLab’s Optics Modules are one of the clearest reasons to choose
DxO. The corrections are based on specific supported combinations
of camera body and lens rather than relying only on a general lens
profile.
This allows PhotoLab to compensate for the behaviour of the lens
across the frame. The centre may require different sharpening from
the corners, while distortion and vignetting can change according
to focal length, focus distance and aperture.
ON1 provides lens-profile correction and manual controls for
distortion, chromatic aberration and vignetting. These tools are
suitable for most conventional editing requirements.
The difference is that optical analysis is one of DxO’s defining
areas of expertise. Photographers who use challenging wide-angle
lenses, compact-camera zooms or optics with soft corners may gain
more from PhotoLab.
AI masking and local adjustments
Both applications provide modern AI-assisted masking, meaning
neither should be dismissed as an editor that requires every
selection to be painted manually.
PhotoLab combines semantic AI Masks with U Point technology,
control points, control lines, linear gradients, brushes and other
local adjustment tools. AI Masks can identify elements such as
people, faces, hair, clothing, skies, backgrounds and vehicles.
The real strength is that an AI selection can be refined using
colour, luminosity and position-sensitive U Point controls. This can
produce a more precise local adjustment without creating a large
stack of conventional layers.
ON1 provides Super Select AI for clicking directly on parts of an
image, along with subject and background selection, depth masks and
Masking Layers. Depth masking can separate areas according to their
apparent distance within the scene, which is useful for applying
different adjustments to foreground and background regions.
ON1’s masking system works naturally with Effects, layers and
filters. A photographer can apply a filter to the sky, subject,
background or another selected area without affecting the entire
photograph.
Masking verdict
PhotoLab offers precise RAW-led masking; ON1 offers broader creative masking.
PhotoLab’s combination of AI Masks and U Point is excellent for
controlled local development. ON1 becomes more flexible when the
masks are being used with layers, effects, composites and a large
collection of creative filters.
Layers, textures and composite editing
Layers are one of ON1 Photo RAW’s most important advantages over
PhotoLab. ON1 can combine multiple photographs, textures and visual
elements inside one document.
Layers can be reordered, transformed, masked and blended. This
allows photographers to replace backgrounds, introduce textures,
create double exposures, add graphic elements or build more complex
composites without moving immediately into Photoshop or Affinity.
PhotoLab uses a non-destructive editing system, but it is not a
pixel-layer compositor. Local adjustments can target multiple areas
independently, yet PhotoLab is not designed to combine several
separate image files into a layered composition.
Photographers who mainly develop existing RAW information may not
need layers. Photographers who create composites, use overlays,
add textures or regularly mix visual elements should favour ON1.
Presets, filters, LUTs and creative effects
ON1 Photo RAW includes a substantial Effects environment. Filters
can be stacked, reordered and masked, creating a flexible finishing
workflow that ranges from subtle contrast and colour treatments to
strongly stylised results.
ON1 also supports presets, LUTs, textures and borders. These tools
can help photographers build repeatable looks, produce social
content or create a more design-led final image without leaving the
application.
PhotoLab includes presets, colour rendering, HSL tools, ClearView,
local adjustments and other creative controls. FilmPack can expand
the system with film renderings, grain and analog-inspired effects.
PhotoLab’s creative tools remain more closely connected to
photographic development. ON1’s tools feel closer to a combined
RAW editor and creative-effects suite.
Generative Erase and distraction removal
ON1 Photo RAW includes Generative Erase for removing objects and
rebuilding the area using surrounding visual information. Automated
distraction tools can also identify elements such as people,
vehicles or power lines.
This can be useful for travel photographs containing tourists,
landscapes crossed by cables, property photographs containing
clutter and compositions with unwanted objects near the edge of
the frame.
PhotoLab includes repair and cloning tools for removing dust spots
and smaller distractions. These tools remain effective for
conventional photographic cleanup but are not positioned as a
broad generative replacement system.
Buyers who regularly remove complicated objects or clean busy
scenes may find ON1’s automated tools save substantial time.
Photographers who only remove occasional sensor dust or small
distractions may not consider this difference important.
Photo management, browsing and searching
ON1 places greater emphasis on operating as both an editor and an
organiser. It can browse files where they already live, create
albums, apply ratings and keywords, stack related images and search
a large photographic library.
This no-import approach can appeal to Lightroom users who dislike
waiting for a large catalogue import before accessing their files.
The library and editing functions remain inside the same application.
PhotoLab’s PhotoLibrary also provides folder access, projects,
ratings, metadata, searching and filtering. It works well for
photographers who already maintain an organised folder structure
and want direct access to their files.
ON1 offers the more ambitious all-in-one organisation system.
PhotoLab offers a more focused library that supports the RAW-editing
workflow without attempting to become the application’s main reason
for purchase.
Resize AI, printing and large output
ON1 integrates Resize AI directly into Photo RAW. The tool is
designed to enlarge photographs while restoring apparent detail and
controlling output sharpening.
This is useful for large prints, heavily cropped wildlife images,
exhibition files, commercial output, older photographs and any
situation where the final dimensions exceed the comfortable native
resolution of the source file.
ON1 also includes print and export tools that support the idea of
completing the whole workflow inside one application.
PhotoLab provides high-quality export, resampling and output
sharpening, but a photographer seeking specialist enlargement
technology may need an additional application or a separate
enlargement stage.
Resize AI gives ON1 a practical value advantage for photographers
who regularly print large or work with significant crops.
Performance and workflow complexity
PhotoLab’s interface can feel relatively focused because most tools
support the central RAW-development process. The photographer moves
through correction, tone, colour, local adjustment and export
without navigating a separate compositor or effects application.
ON1 contains more modules and more types of tool. That breadth can
reduce the need for other applications, but it can also make the
interface feel busier while the user learns where each function
belongs.
The fastest program is not automatically the one with fewer
controls. ON1 may be faster when layers, retouching, effects and
resizing would otherwise require several applications. PhotoLab may
be faster when the job is simply to develop a folder of RAW files
to the highest possible technical standard.
Can either program replace Lightroom and Photoshop?
PhotoLab can replace a substantial part of Lightroom’s RAW-editing
workflow, especially for photographers who use folders rather than
relying heavily on one central catalogue. It can also provide more
advanced RAW noise reduction and optical correction than many users
receive from their existing editor.
PhotoLab does not replace Photoshop-style layers, advanced
compositing or complex pixel retouching. A separate editor may
still be required for those tasks.
ON1 is more directly positioned as an alternative to using both
Lightroom and Photoshop. It combines organisation, RAW development,
layers, masks, effects, retouching and output.
This does not mean ON1 matches every specialised Adobe feature, but
it covers a wider part of the combined workflow than PhotoLab alone.
Lightroom replacement verdict
ON1 is the broader replacement; PhotoLab is the more specialised upgrade.
Choose ON1 when your objective is to reduce the number of
applications you use. Choose PhotoLab when your objective is to
improve the quality of the RAW-processing stage, even if another
application remains part of the workflow.
