What is the real difference between FilmPack and Nik Collection?
FilmPack and Nik Collection are both owned and developed by DxO, but
they are not alternative versions of the same software.
DxO FilmPack 8 is a specialist film-emulation application.
It is designed to recreate the response, colour, tonality and grain
of real analog film stocks while adding related darkroom-inspired
creative tools.
Nik Collection 9 is a complete suite of seven creative
applications and plugins.
It includes tools for colour, black and white, analog effects,
selective adjustment, HDR, noise reduction and sharpening.
Three Nik applications overlap most directly with FilmPack:
Nik Analog Efex, Nik Color Efex and Nik Silver Efex. The remaining
applications extend Nik into areas FilmPack does not attempt to
cover.
FilmPack is therefore the more specialised and historically
accurate product. Nik Collection is the broader and more
experimental creative product.
The fundamental choice
Do you want the best film tool or the widest creative toolbox?
Choose FilmPack when analog authenticity is the objective. Choose
Nik Collection when film effects are only one part of a much
larger colour, monochrome, HDR and Photoshop workflow.
Authentic film emulation and analog accuracy
FilmPack’s defining feature is the way its film profiles are
created. DxO measures real film material to analyse colour response,
tonal behaviour and grain structure.
FilmPack 8 includes 153 authentic film renderings covering colour
negative, colour positive, black-and-white, instant, historical and
specialist stocks.
The software is intended to reproduce more than a recognisable
colour palette. Its renderings aim to recreate how the original film
responded to light across different tones and colours.
Film-specific grain can then be applied according to the
characteristics of the selected stock rather than using one generic
digital texture.
Nik Collection also contains many excellent film simulations. Nik
Silver Efex includes classic black-and-white films, while Color Efex
and Analog Efex provide colour and camera-inspired looks.
The difference is emphasis. Film simulation is one part of the Nik
Collection. It is the complete reason FilmPack exists.
Which looks more like real film?
FilmPack is the safer recommendation when the objective is to match
the tonal and grain behaviour of a specific real-world stock.
Nik can produce extremely convincing analog-inspired images, but it
is also designed to encourage creative combinations, stylisation and
experimentation that may move beyond strict film accuracy.
Film grain, texture and print character
FilmPack’s grain is based on the shape and size of grain found in
the original material. The grain can also be related to an intended
film or output format.
This makes FilmPack particularly attractive for photographers who
want a cohesive analog rendering rather than an additional grain
layer placed over an otherwise digital-looking image.
Nik Silver Efex and Color Efex include Real Grain tools, while
Analog Efex contains textures, camera effects and other
analog-inspired treatments.
Nik Collection 9 also adds Halation, allowing photographers to
recreate the soft glow that can appear around bright highlights in
some film stocks.
Nik provides more ways to combine grain with other creative effects.
FilmPack provides the more focused connection between the selected
film stock and the resulting grain.

Time Warp, Time Machine and photographic history
FilmPack 8 introduces Time Warp, an interactive way to move through
more than two centuries of photographic aesthetics.
A Time Travel control allows different historical periods and
associated visual styles to be previewed quickly. The selected looks
recreate film rendering, tonal behaviour, grain and surface
character associated with different eras.
Ageify can introduce realistic degradation associated with older
photographic prints. This can include a more weathered, faded or
historically aged character.
Time Machine provides contextual photography, historical
information and renderings connected to influential periods and
processes.
Nik Collection is more focused on direct visual experimentation than
on guiding the user through photographic history. It contains
vintage tools and analog simulations, but it does not provide the
same curated historical journey.
Scanned Film Optimization and negative conversion
FilmPack 8 includes a dedicated Scanned Film Optimization panel for
photographers digitising negatives.
Colour and black-and-white negatives can be inverted, while
dedicated tone-curve presets help address density, colour shifts and
contrast.
This provides a more focused starting point than manually reversing
every scan through general curves and colour controls.
Nik Collection can apply creative and corrective edits to a
digitised film image, but it does not provide the same dedicated
negative-inversion workflow.
Film photographers scanning a large archive therefore have a
stronger reason to choose FilmPack.
Black-and-white editing: FilmPack vs Silver Efex
Black-and-white photography is one of the closest areas of
competition between the two products.
FilmPack provides a substantial collection of monochrome film
renderings, accurate grain, contrast controls, toning and
darkroom-inspired finishing tools.
Nik Silver Efex is a dedicated black-and-white digital darkroom. It
combines monochrome film simulations with selective tonal control,
structure, local adjustments, colour filtering, borders and
finishing effects.
Silver Efex is generally the more flexible application when the
photographer wants to build a black-and-white image from the tonal
structure upwards.
FilmPack is generally the stronger choice when the photographer
wants the result to begin with the measured character of a
particular black-and-white film stock.
Black-and-white verdict
Silver Efex offers more creative control; FilmPack offers stronger film authenticity.
Choose according to whether the desired result is a precise
recreation of film or a fully constructed digital
black-and-white interpretation.
Creative colour editing and effects
FilmPack includes HSL adjustments, split toning, contrast controls,
colour filters, vignetting, blur, frames, textures and light leaks.
These tools allow the film rendering to be customised rather than
applied as a fixed preset.
Nik Collection provides a much larger creative environment. Nik
Color Efex can stack and reorder filters, adjust colour and tone,
create atmosphere and combine effects using blending modes.
Nik Viveza focuses on selective colour, contrast and tonal editing.
Nik Analog Efex recreates vintage cameras, lenses, plates, textures
and photographic imperfections.
Nik Collection 9 adds a new colour-grading tool that controls
shadows, midtones, highlights and global colour. Tonal ranges can be
adjusted individually or locked together.
The suite also adds Chromatic Shift, Glass Effect and Halation,
expanding the range from subtle analog texture to highly graphic
experimentation.
Eighteen blending modes are now available in Color Efex and Analog
Efex, allowing filters and textures to interact in many different
ways.
FilmPack remains more coherent when the result should feel like one
identifiable analog process. Nik is stronger when the photographer
wants to build a completely original combination of effects.
AI Masks, Depth Masks and local adjustments
Nik Collection 9 introduces AI Masks capable of identifying a
subject after the user clicks an object or draws a bounding box.
Depth Masks analyse the image to create a depth map. Adjustments can
then be targeted according to the apparent distance of subjects from
the camera.
These tools work alongside Nik’s established U Point system,
including control points, control lines, colour masks and
luminosity-based selections.
Masks can be moved between compatible Nik plugins, allowing one
selection to be reused during several stages of the creative edit.
FilmPack includes luminosity-based local control and can benefit
from the masking tools available through PhotoLab or Photoshop.
However, advanced intelligent masking is not the primary reason to
purchase FilmPack.
Nik Collection therefore has the clear advantage for complex local
creative adjustments.
What is included in Nik Collection 9?
RAW editing and PhotoLab integration
FilmPack integrates directly with DxO PhotoLab 9. Activating a valid
FilmPack licence reveals the additional rendering and creative tools
inside PhotoLab’s editing palettes.
This allows FilmPack effects to remain connected to the supported
camera RAW file rather than being applied only after the image has
been converted to TIFF or JPEG.
The photographer can combine DeepPRIME, DxO Optics Modules, AI
Masks, local adjustments and FilmPack rendering in one
non-destructive environment.
Nik Collection can also be launched from PhotoLab, but its plugins
generally operate on an exported rendered file.
FilmPack therefore offers the smoother PhotoLab workflow,
particularly when multiple photographs need a consistent film
rendering before batch export.
Photoshop integration and layered editing
FilmPack 8 includes a dedicated Photoshop panel, allowing film
renderings to be applied without leaving the Photoshop interface.
Nik Collection provides the deeper Photoshop workflow. A central
panel offers quick access to all seven applications, saved presets
and recent edits.
Edits can be returned as a new layer, a layer with a mask, an
adjusted current layer or a Smart Object.
Photoshop masks can be accessed from within Nik, while Nik masks can
be reused between plugins. Edits can also be sent back to Photoshop
as layers while the photographer continues working.
This makes Nik Collection substantially more flexible for
commercial retouching, composites, client amendments and
non-destructive layered production.
FilmPack’s Photoshop integration is excellent for applying a
specific analog rendering. Nik Collection’s integration is designed
to support a complete multi-plugin production workflow.
Lightroom, Affinity and standalone workflows
FilmPack 8 can work through supported PhotoLab, Photoshop and
Lightroom Classic workflows, as well as through its standalone
application.
Nik Collection integrates with Photoshop, Affinity, DxO PhotoLab and
Lightroom workflows, while its applications can also be used
independently.
Lightroom users can send rendered files into Nik and later return
to their catalogue. Nik also supports re-editable TIFF workflows and
applying recent edits across several photographs.
Affinity users may prefer Nik Collection because the suite adds
specialist creative plugins to an existing layer-based retouching
environment.
PhotoLab users may prefer FilmPack because its controls become part
of the RAW editor rather than a separate plugin stage.
Presets, recipes and repeatable creative work
FilmPack provides presets and film renderings that can be applied
consistently across groups of photographs.
When FilmPack is integrated with PhotoLab, the rendering can form
part of a larger preset containing RAW corrections, colour, tone,
local adjustments and output decisions.
Nik Collection allows presets to be created, saved, organised,
exported and imported across its supported plugins.
Filter stacks can be built inside Color Efex and Analog Efex, while
local adjustments can be saved and reused.
Nik also allows recent edits to be recalled and applied quickly,
which can speed up work on visually related photographs.
FilmPack is stronger when consistency means matching a specific
analog stock. Nik is stronger when consistency means repeating a
more complex stack of creative filters.
Dfine vs PhotoLab DeepPRIME
Nik Dfine is a dedicated noise-reduction application for rendered
photographic files. It can analyse noise and apply correction
globally or selectively.
FilmPack does not include a dedicated technical denoising engine.
When used inside PhotoLab, it benefits from PhotoLab’s DeepPRIME
technology.
DeepPRIME works at the RAW demosaicing stage and is therefore a
fundamentally different type of processing from noise reduction
applied to an already rendered file.
Photographers using supported RAW files should normally perform
technical noise reduction in PhotoLab or PureRAW before adding
FilmPack or Nik creative effects.
Sharpener and output preparation
Nik Sharpener separates capture sharpening from output sharpening.
The final treatment can be adjusted according to the intended print
or display requirements.
FilmPack does not contain a dedicated two-stage sharpening
application. It relies on PhotoLab, Photoshop, Lightroom or another
host application for technical sharpness control.
Nik Collection therefore offers the broader self-contained toolkit
when the photographer wants both creative effects and specialist
output preparation.
HDR editing
Nik HDR Efex can merge bracketed exposures and provide creative
control over tone mapping, contrast, colour and local adjustments.
FilmPack is not designed as an HDR-merging application. A merged
image can be styled with FilmPack after the exposures have been
combined elsewhere.
Landscape, architecture and interior photographers who regularly
create bracketed HDR images therefore gain more practical
functionality from Nik Collection.
Ease of use and learning curve
FilmPack is easier to understand because all its tools support one
central objective: recreating or customising an analog-inspired
photographic result.
A photographer can select a film rendering, adjust intensity,
refine grain and then add toning, texture or other finishing effects.
Nik Collection contains seven applications with different purposes,
controls, presets and production workflows.
The suite offers substantially more possibilities, but learning
which plugin to use and how to move between them requires more time.
FilmPack is the simpler focused purchase. Nik Collection is the
deeper long-term creative environment.
Can FilmPack and Nik Collection be used together?
Yes. The two products can complement each other extremely well.
FilmPack can establish the technically accurate film response and
grain, particularly while the original RAW file remains inside
PhotoLab.
The rendered image can then enter Nik Collection for selective
colour, black-and-white refinement, Halation, texture, HDR,
sharpening or other creative effects.
Care is required because both products can add grain, contrast,
toning, vignetting and analog imperfections.
Applying similar effects twice can create an exaggerated and less
convincing result. Decide which application will control each stage
before building the final look.
Combined workflow advice
Use FilmPack for the film stock and Nik for the finishing layer.
This keeps the analog foundation coherent while still allowing
Nik’s specialist masking, colour, monochrome and Photoshop tools
to extend the final image.
