What is the main difference between PhotoLab and PureRAW?
DxO PhotoLab and DxO PureRAW share the same underlying image-quality
philosophy, but they are designed to occupy different positions in
the photographic workflow.
DxO PhotoLab 9 is an end-to-end RAW photo editor.
It can browse the original files, apply DeepPRIME processing,
correct the lens, adjust exposure and colour, create local masks,
retouch distractions, manage metadata and export completed images.
DxO PureRAW 6 is a specialist RAW pre-processor.
It improves demosaicing, noise, optical sharpness, distortion,
vignetting and chromatic aberration before sending the enhanced file
into another editing application.
PureRAW does not attempt to replace Lightroom, Photoshop, Capture
One, Affinity or another complete editor. Its purpose is to improve
the technical quality of the file that those applications receive.
PhotoLab is designed for photographers who want DxO to perform both
the technical processing and most of the creative editing.
The fundamental choice
Will DxO be your editor or your preprocessing stage?
Choose PhotoLab when you want to remain inside the DxO
environment. Choose PureRAW when you want to keep your current
editor but improve the files before you begin editing.
Do PhotoLab and PureRAW produce the same image quality?
PhotoLab and PureRAW are based on the same DxO RAW-processing engine
and share core technologies including demosaicing, DeepPRIME noise
reduction and camera-and-lens corrections.
When equivalent processing options are selected for a supported RAW
file, the technical result can therefore be extremely similar.
PureRAW is not intended to contain a fundamentally superior version
of DxO’s processing technology.
The important difference is the amount of control available before
export. PhotoLab exposes the image within a complete editing
environment, allowing the photographer to adjust the processing and
combine it with broader tonal, colour and local work.
PureRAW presents a simpler workflow. The photographer selects the
appropriate processing method and output options, then continues
editing the processed file elsewhere.
The quality difference between the applications is therefore less
important than the workflow difference. Buying both does not
automatically provide two separate levels of DeepPRIME quality.
DeepPRIME 3 and DeepPRIME XD3
DeepPRIME combines RAW demosaicing and noise reduction rather than
treating them as unrelated stages. This allows the processing to
distinguish more effectively between genuine image detail and
unwanted sensor noise.
DeepPRIME XD3 is designed for the most demanding files. It uses a
larger neural network to recover detail, reduce artefacts and
preserve natural textures in high-ISO or difficult exposures.
Subjects containing feathers, fur, hair, fabric, foliage,
architecture and repeating fine detail can particularly benefit.
PureRAW 6 supports DeepPRIME XD3 for compatible Bayer and X-Trans
files. The current PhotoLab 9 processing pipeline also includes
DeepPRIME XD3, meaning photographers do not need PureRAW solely to
access this technology when the appropriate PhotoLab edition already
provides it.
Who benefits most from DeepPRIME?
Wildlife photographers, event photographers, wedding
photographers, night street photographers, interior photographers
and users of compact or smaller-sensor cameras are likely to see the
greatest benefit.

DxO Optics Modules and lens corrections
Both applications use DxO Optics Modules for supported
camera-and-lens combinations. These modules are created from
equipment analysis rather than relying only on a general lens profile.
The modules can address geometric distortion, vignetting,
chromatic aberration and differences in lens sharpness across the
image frame.
PhotoLab places these corrections inside a complete editing
environment. The photographer can combine them with exposure,
colour, local masks and output decisions before completing the file.
PureRAW applies the same broad correction philosophy during the
preprocessing stage. This is ideal when a Lightroom or Photoshop
user wants the benefit of DxO’s optical science without changing
the rest of the workflow.
Photographers using compact zooms, superzooms, wide-angle lenses or
optics with softer corners may see particularly noticeable benefits.
PhotoLab includes the controls expected from a complete RAW editor:
exposure, highlights, shadows, blacks, contrast, white balance,
colour rendering, HSL adjustments, curves, sharpening, ClearView
Plus and Smart Lighting.
Presets can create repeatable starting points, while colour
renderings and optional FilmPack integration can develop a wider
range of creative looks.
PureRAW does not attempt to provide this complete creative
environment. Its processing choices influence the technical quality
and character of the exported file, but the detailed visual edit is
expected to happen in another application.
This makes PureRAW especially attractive to users who already have
years of Lightroom presets, Photoshop actions or another established
colour workflow.
It makes PhotoLab more attractive to photographers who want to
reduce the number of applications required to finish a photograph.
AI Masks and local adjustments
PhotoLab 9 includes semantic AI Masks capable of identifying
subjects such as skies, people, faces, hair, animals, vehicles and
backgrounds.
These masks can be combined with U Point control points, control
lines, gradients, brushes, hue masks and other selection tools.
PhotoLab can also apply DeepPRIME noise reduction and Lens
Sharpness Optimization selectively to local areas. A photographer
can therefore reduce noise more strongly in a background while
protecting detail in the subject, or sharpen one area without
treating the whole frame identically.
PureRAW is designed around automated preprocessing rather than a
complete mask-based creative workflow. It offers a substantially
simpler route from the original RAW file to an improved DNG, TIFF
or JPEG.
Local editing verdict
PhotoLab is the clear choice when selective control matters.
PureRAW is designed to make strong technical decisions quickly.
PhotoLab allows those technologies to become part of a much more
controlled local editing process.
Image management, projects and metadata
PhotoLab includes a catalog-free PhotoLibrary that can browse the
folders already stored on the computer.
Photographers can apply star ratings, colour labels, pick or reject
markers, keywords and metadata. Files can be searched and filtered,
while Projects create virtual collections without moving the
originals.
Virtual Copies allow several interpretations of one RAW file
without duplicating the original. One version might be colour,
another monochrome and another prepared for a different crop or
output.
PureRAW is not a full digital asset-management application. It can
detect files, process batches and rename originals or exports, but
the long-term organisation is expected to remain inside Lightroom,
Bridge, Finder, Explorer or another library system.
A Lightroom user may regard this as an advantage because PureRAW
does not attempt to duplicate the existing catalogue. A
photographer seeking an Adobe alternative is more likely to prefer
PhotoLab.
PureRAW 6 with Lightroom Classic
PureRAW’s Lightroom Classic integration is one of its strongest
practical advantages.
Selected RAW files can be sent to PureRAW through the plugin. After
processing, the enhanced files return to Lightroom, allowing the
photographer to continue using existing collections, metadata,
ratings, presets and catalogue organisation.
This workflow allows photographers to retain the familiar Lightroom
interface while replacing the first stage of RAW conversion with
DxO processing.
PureRAW is therefore especially compelling for photographers who
like Lightroom’s library and editing tools but want stronger
high-ISO processing or optical correction.
PhotoLab can also exchange files with Lightroom, but it is more
naturally positioned as an alternative complete editor rather than
a lightweight Lightroom preprocessing plugin.
PureRAW 6 with Photoshop
PureRAW can operate as a Smart Filter within a compatible Photoshop
workflow. This allows the DxO processing to be revisited rather than
permanently locking every choice into the first exported file.
This is particularly useful for commercial retouchers and
photographers who regard Photoshop as the centre of production but
prefer DxO’s RAW processing to Adobe Camera Raw for certain files.
The photographer can use PureRAW for denoising, demosaicing and
optical correction, then continue with layers, masks, compositing,
retouching and client amendments inside Photoshop.
PhotoLab can export a high-quality file to Photoshop, but the
PureRAW Smart Filter route is more directly designed around
returning to the DxO preprocessing settings.
Using PureRAW with Capture One, Affinity or another editor
PureRAW can also operate as a standalone preprocessing application.
RAW files can be dragged into the program or sent through Finder
and Explorer.
The processed DNG, TIFF or JPEG can then be opened in Capture One,
Affinity, ON1 Photo RAW or another compatible application.
This provides access to DxO processing without requiring the
photographer to abandon the preferred editor.
Compatibility and behaviour can differ between applications,
particularly with linear DNG files. Test the complete workflow using
your own cameras, metadata and colour requirements before converting
a large archive.
Linear DNG, TIFF and JPEG output
PureRAW can create an improved DNG designed to retain substantial
editing flexibility in the next RAW editor.
The DNG is not the untouched camera RAW file. It contains processed
image data produced by DxO’s demosaicing, denoising and optical
pipeline. It should therefore be treated as a new working file
alongside the original.
TIFF output is useful when the next stage involves pixel editing,
retouching or compositing and the photographer does not need the
same RAW-style flexibility.
JPEG is useful for smaller final files and quick delivery, although
it offers less editing latitude than DNG or high-bit-depth TIFF.
PhotoLab can also export multiple formats, but it can complete most
of the editing before export rather than creating an intermediate
file for another RAW editor.
High-Fidelity DNG compression and storage
PureRAW 6 introduced High-Fidelity DNG compression designed to
produce DNG files up to approximately four times smaller than
standard uncompressed versions while retaining RAW-quality editing
flexibility.
This is significant because preprocessing an entire archive can
otherwise create a second collection of very large files.
Smaller DNGs can reduce storage costs, backup time and the space
required for large Lightroom catalogues.
PhotoLab 9.6 also includes High-Fidelity Compression for DNG export,
so this is no longer a reason to choose PureRAW alone.
The practical distinction remains the destination of the file:
PureRAW commonly creates the DNG for onward editing, while PhotoLab
can either export a DNG or complete the photograph itself.
AI sensor-dust removal
PureRAW 6 includes AI-powered sensor-dust removal designed to detect
and correct dust marks automatically across batches.
This can be particularly useful for event, studio, landscape and
travel photographers who discover repeated dust spots across a
complete shoot.
Manually repairing the same dust mark across hundreds of images can
be time-consuming. Automated detection can make PureRAW an efficient
first stage before the images return to Lightroom.
PhotoLab includes capable repair and cloning tools for individual
corrections. PureRAW’s automated batch approach is more directly
aimed at repeated sensor-dust problems across many files.
Batch processing, speed and renaming
PureRAW 6 uses parallel processing to improve throughput when
working through large batches. The application can prepare further
photographs while other files are being completed.
It can also automatically detect memory cards and provide advanced
renaming options for original and exported files.
This workflow is ideal for photographers who want to import a shoot,
apply a consistent processing choice and return the improved files
to another editor.
PhotoLab also supports batch processing, advanced renaming, presets
and multiple parallel exports. Its advantage is that the complete
tonal and colour edit can be included in that batch workflow.
PureRAW is faster to understand because fewer creative decisions are
required. PhotoLab can save more total time when it eliminates the
need to continue editing every image elsewhere.
Do you need PureRAW if you already own PhotoLab?
In most cases, a photographer who already owns the appropriate
PhotoLab edition does not need PureRAW for image-quality reasons.
PhotoLab includes the same core DxO RAW-processing technologies
directly inside the complete editing application.
PureRAW does not operate as a PhotoLab plugin. The two programs are
separate products rather than a combined upgrade system.
PureRAW may still be useful when the photographer wants its specific
Lightroom Classic plugin, Photoshop Smart Filter integration,
automated sensor-dust workflow or simpler drag-and-drop operation.
Buying both should therefore be based on a specific workflow need,
not the assumption that PureRAW automatically produces better files
than PhotoLab.
Existing PhotoLab users
Do not buy PureRAW simply to duplicate DeepPRIME.
Buy PureRAW alongside PhotoLab only when its Adobe integration,
automation or preprocessing workflow solves a separate practical
problem.
Do you need PhotoLab if you already own PureRAW?
PureRAW users do not need PhotoLab when Lightroom, Photoshop,
Capture One or another application already provides all the editing
and organisational tools they require.
PhotoLab becomes valuable when the photographer wants to reduce
dependence on the existing editor or gain access to DxO’s complete
local, tonal, colour and organisational environment.
PhotoLab can also reduce the number of intermediate files. The RAW
file can be processed and completed within one application instead
of being converted to DNG or TIFF before the main edit begins.
Photographers attracted by U Point, AI Masks, local DeepPRIME,
virtual copies, projects, metadata and detailed colour controls
should consider PhotoLab.
Perpetual licences and upgrade decisions
PhotoLab and PureRAW are both sold through perpetual licences for
the purchased major version.
The software can continue to be used without maintaining a monthly
subscription, although future major upgrades may be sold separately.
The value calculation depends on how much of the application will
be used. PureRAW can represent the more focused purchase when the
photographer only needs preprocessing.
PhotoLab can represent better overall value when its editing,
masking, organisation and export tools replace another paid RAW
editor.
PhotoLab also has a longer free-trial period than PureRAW at the time
this comparison was prepared. Test each product with the same
representative files before deciding.
